Betsey Flack Matthews
Betsey Flack Matthews grew up in Asheville and attended Enka High School. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004, with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She then attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. After graduating from Mercer in 2007, Betsey moved to Dalton, Georgia and worked as a public defender for seven years in the Conasauga Judicial Circuit. While working as a public defender Betsey handled thousands of criminal cases for indigent defendants.
In 2014, Betsey returned to her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina and began working at the Law Offices of James M. Edmonds. As an associate of Mr. Edmonds, she learned a great deal about real estate law and other areas of civil practice.
She and her husband, Chris Matthews, have two children, Maggie and Grace. As a family they enjoy outdoor adventures and traveling.

James M. Edmonds
Jim Edmonds graduated from the University of Virginia with distinction in 1972. He went on to graduate from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1975. Jim has practiced law in Candler, North Carolina for nearly forty years. He has served the Western North Carolina area in both state and federal courts. Jim provides legal service on a wide variety of subjects, but is most heavily concentrated in real estate, wills and estates, bankruptcy, corporations, and landlord-tenant law.
Jim has been active in charitable and educational affairs in his community for many years. He is a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, having formerly served on the church Vestry and as a board member of In the Oaks. Jim served for several years as an Advisory Council member of Candler Elementary and Enka Middle schools. He was elected to the Buncombe County Board of Education in 1998 and served for eight years as a Board member and for two years as Chairman of the Board. Jim currently serves on the Enka Schools Foundation, Biltmore Lake Charitable Trust, the Buncombe County Tax Reevaluation Committee and the City of Asheville Planning and Zoning Committee. He resides with Betsy, his wife of thirty-eight years, in Candler. Mr. Edmonds retired at the end of 2020 and is enjoying spending more time with his family!
